Lotus 78 #5 Mario Andretti 1977 US GP West Winner
Andretti's #5 won the 1977 US Grand Prix West at Long Beach, the first win for a ground-effect F1 car.
About the car
The Lotus 78 was the Formula One car Colin Chapman, Tony Rudd, Peter Wright, Ralph Bellamy and Martin Ogilvie designed for 1977. Its sidepods were shaped as inverted aerofoils with sliding skirts, producing downforce from the underbody, the first application of ground effect in the championship. Powered by the Cosworth DFV, it ran in John Player Special black and gold. Mario Andretti won four races in 1977 at Long Beach, Jarama, Dijon and Monza, and Gunnar Nilsson won at Zolder. Ronnie Peterson won the 1978 South African Grand Prix in the 78 before the Lotus 79 replaced it mid-season on the way to the 1978 titles.
